Welcome from Christopher Harris

Hello Summit attendees, and welcome to the discussion space for the School Library 2.0 track. I am greatly looking forward to the conversations that will help define the emerging ideas that collectively make up School Library 2.0. My first explorations of this topic on Infomancy were guided by the discussions about Library 2.0 and Web 2.0. As such, I thought it might be helpful to provide some resources so that we can approach this conversation from a common background. Please make use of the wiki to add links to additional resources or definitions. You can change any page on the wiki by clicking the "Edit" button and providing the wiki password (slj). Welcome from Michael Stephens

Greetings all! I'm looking forward to the Summit and to discussing SL2 with the incredible folks on the panel and the attendees. The concepts of digitally re-shifting school libraries can be useful for so many librarians: they're scalable, flexible and reasonably inexpensive. I am fascinated by the real-life examples, such as the Night Blog by Margaret Lincoln at Lakeview High School in Michigan, that engage students and promote collaboration. See you at the Summit! Welcome from Diane Chen

From a practical point of view, how can we position the people in school libraries (with all their various titles) to prepare, plan, and posit SL2 to benefit our students and our faculties? I'm eagerly anticipating this discussion because I have encountered resistance by library media specialists to embracing, using, and exploring Web 2.0 strategies. As a techie, I love the possibilities and look forward to helping take the enthusiasm for what we can do into the practical world where we teach.

Welcome from Doug Achterman

I'm looking forward to this conversation, and I'm especially interested in ways that Web 2.0 can promote teaching and learning through the library media center. As a library media specialist in a large high school, I'm thinking not only about possibilities, but also about what works right now. SLJ Summit Presentation Slides

David Warlick speaking in Scotland

Welcome from David Warlick

I am writing this from the back seat of a cab, on my way to speak at the New Jersey Association of School Librarians conference. I'm typing this into my mobile phone. My driver is talking into an information appliance that is attached to his ear, in a language that is probably middle eastern. He is also driving with the assistance of a 6x6 GPS display that is tracking our course along the highway through rural New Jersey.

What is a library, in a world where information flows in such ways?

Before the SLJ Summit, I posted several blogs, asking readers to comments about the function of the library and the librarian when virtually all practical information is only a mouse click away. Here are links to the blog entries and their comments.

Guiding Questions

  1. What is School Library 2.0 ?
  2. In order for a school library media program to achieve a level of School library 2.0 a level of trust and safety must be reached. What steps must be taken to achieve an acceptable level of trust and safety?
  3. What elements of learning that aren’t currently supported or don’t exist will become possible with School Library 2.0 ? How will this affect student achievement?
  4. Is there a relation between our school library collection and School Library 2.0?
  5. The perception of a school library and the activities which occur there is greatly distorted by the media, fellow educators and the public in general. Many programs exist to change this perception. What marketing or promotional steps must be taken to create a School Library 2.0?
